Maple Leaf Consumer Foods 2nd Shift:
The implementation of second shift at the Brandon Maple Leaf facility was completed in fall 2008. The Brandon facility is now processing an average of 85,000 hogs per week which equates to approximately 7,700 metric tonnes of live hogs.

The facility currently employs over 2,250 people comprised of approximately 2,100 hourly and 150 salaried staff. Approximately 70% of the full-time staff complement is foreign in origin, many of which are already permanent residents.

The Brandon facility continues to define hiring plans for 2009. With a turnover rate of ~20%, the Brandon facility expects to hire approximately 420 people in 2009. In keeping with their recruitment practises, efforts will be made to secure employees from within the local, regional and national labour market. However, given the tight labour conditions, it is anticipated that approximately 200 of the 2009 hires will be recruited from foreign countries providing the necessary approvals are received. The bulk of the international workers will arrive late spring/early summer with domestic recruiting to continue throughout the year.

PhosCan:
PhosCan Chemical Corporation intends to establish a granular fertilizer plant in Brandon. The Brandon plant, is part of a much larger project that would include a mining operation established at Hearst, Ontario. The overall project is valued at roughly $900 million, with approximately $150 million invested in the Brandon portion of the project. Site work in Brandon is scheduled to begin in late 2010 and construction is expected to take approximately 12-18 months. Once operational, the Brandon facility will employ approximately 100 employees. The closed loop process that will be utilized at the facility results in virtually no water demand for processing and no effluent discharge.
